For anyone looking to stay on top of self service innovation, the Loews Coral Gables in Miami was the place to be last week when the fourth annual Self-Service Innovation Summit came to town. For three days, hundreds of attendees got a chance to see exhibits showcasing the latest technology in between education sessions.

During exhibit hours, attendees feasted on payment systems, interactive touchscreens, voice interaction modules, AI-enabled identity verification software, multi-cellular routers, scan engines, security systems, self-service robots and more.

The Summit is one of several industry events organized by Networld Media Group, the parent company of Kiosk Marketplace and Vending Times. The media company's next event is the Restaurant Franchising & Innovation Summit March 24-26, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following are Self-Service Innovation Summit exhibit highlights in alphabetical order.

365 Retail Markets Inc.

365 Retail Markets Inc. showed its MM6 for Markets, a countertop kiosk with a 22-inch touchscreen that accepts tap, cashless, cash and 365 Global Market Account payment.

The MM6 also features a front-open chassis and contains a built-in battery backup to prevent service disruptions while a camera lens captures images within a 185-degree field of view for detailed back-office reporting. Internal speakers enable consumers to hear voice commands to return canceled items.

The company also showed its Stockwell 2.0 featuring a dedicated refrigerated door in conjunction with an ambient door, an anonymous tap/insert credit card and GMA payment enabled via the company's Pico device, along with reduced bandwidth consumption, enhanced product recognition accuracy and easier access on the front panel to service components.

Allpoint Wireless

Allpoint Wireless presented its cellular connectivity solution which supports self-serve kiosks and jukeboxes in addition to its surcharge-free ATM network.

The company has expanded its surcharge-free ATM cash withdrawals to include cash deposits at selected locations. The deposit access is made available through the customer's financial service provider.

The Allpoint ATMs also allow consumers to add cash to their Amazon balances through the Amazon Cash program, enabling cash centric customers to shop online.

Allpoint ATMs, which display signage on the ATM itself, are available at select CVS, Walgreens and other retail stores.

Bevi

Bevi presented its Standup 2.0 water dispenser that features a touchscreen that allows users to choose still or sparkling water, pick a temperature, mix flavors and top their drink off with an enhancement.

The touchscreen prompts the user to select the temperature, be it cold, ambient or hot. They can also choose from more than 12 natural flavors and mix as many as three at a time and adjust the flavor strength.

They can then top off their selection with up to two enhancements such as vitamin boost, electrolytes or caffeine.

Another prompt allows the user to view the calories, sugar and caffeine levels of their selected beverage.

The "explore" tab allows the user to see the environmental impact in terms of bottles saved.

Burroughs Corp.

Burroughs Corp., a service provider for self-service technology, robotic automation systems, payment and transaction technology, presented its services to ensure uptime across equipment and technology fleets.

This past year, the company entered into a partnership with Invenda Group, a provider of automated retail devices and software, granting the Invenda platform access to Burroughs' lifecycle management offerings, including installation to onsite maintenance to remote monitoring and triage services.

Camlock Systems

Camlock Systems, a provider of locks and access control systems, presented access control, electronic locking, locking hardware, cylinders and accessories.

Applications include vending, kiosks, amusement and gaming machines, smart lockers, street furniture, transportation and utilities.

The company has offices in the U.S., the U.K. and Taiwan, and serves customers in over 140 countries spanning across Europe, Africa, Southern Asia, and North and South America.

Code Factory

Code Factory, a Spain-based provider of voice interaction technology, presented its VoiceTopping voice interaction solution that integrates with voice command recognition to enhance user interfaces.

The solution is powered by Cerence's CSDK and its speech signal enhancement module to ensure optional voice command recognition, even in challenging audio conditions. VoiceTopping creates hands-free experiences to refine how users interact with a device.

Use cases include self-serve kiosks, smart retail, smart appliances, manufacturing, wellness and customer service automation.

DPL

DPL, which provides managed wireless services, presented its Hercules AI 2.0 automated IoT management solution, a virtual technician that can minimize downtime by automatically fixing common ATM errors.

DPL's Hercules modems and customer portals feature built-in AI monitors that continuously learn ways to better assist ATM fleet managers.

The AI monitors include application monitors such as ATM health checks and remote management, security monitors including jackpotting mitigation and operating system monitors such as ping monitors.

ECS Industrial Computer

ECS Industrial Computer, a Taipei, Taiwan-based provider of industrial embedded motherboard, panel PC, mini PC, all-in-one PC and EV charger products, presented its extensive range of offerings.

Vertical applications include the kiosk, point-of-sale, ATM, gaming, hospitality, EV charging, office, retail, education and transportation industries.

The company has operating sites in Tokyo, Japan, Seoul, South Korea, Fremont, California, Shenzhen, China and Thailand, and supports a global service network.

Epson

Epson, a provider of kiosks, mobile POS products and thermal printing solutions for receipt and label printing, presented several solutions:

  • The EU-m30 kiosk thermal receipt printer integrates into the RedyRef interactive kiosk.
  • The OmniLink TM-m30II-SL with a built-in tablet mount offers a mobile POS solution in a small form factor and industrial design.
  • The OmniLink TM-T88VII printer offers connectivity between multiple devices.
  • The OmniLink TM-L100 line-free thermal label printer prints personalized labels and offers connectivity and paper saving features.

Esper

Esper's device management platform enables customers to manage devices such as kiosks, POS terminals, tablets and interactive signage. Customers will soon be able to manage iOS devices alongside Android from the same console.

The company's unified control center will allow customers to manage an OS device fleet without having to jump between multiple tools to manage Android and iOS devices separately, enabling full control of all devices from a single pane of glass.

Friendlyway

Friendlyway, based in Germany, offers a cloud-based, software-as-a-service platform that provides automated features such as device management, wayfinding, visitor check-in, access management, interactive self service, interactive consultations, remote visitor assistance, queue management, facilities booking services and more.

The service also supports video multi-language capabilities.

Current customers include shopping centers, hotels, trade shows, airports, railway stations, financial institutions, health care facilities, educational institutions, government agencies, industrial sites, museums, fuel stations and automotive showrooms.

Ginko Systems LLC

Ginko Systems LLC, a kiosk manufacturer, presented its Insomniac kiosk for outdoor self storage. In conjunction with the Open Tech Alliance, a self-storage software solutions provider, the kiosk offers the end user cloud-based access control for self-storage, making the unit a fully deployable self-storage solution.

The integration enables operators to minimize tenant frustration and reduces customer service costs. It also makes it easier for self storage operators to manage facility access with real-time account updates to automatically manage tenant access based on account status.

Granite

Granite, a provider of solutions for voice, data, Internet, wireless, video and secure network options, presented its "edgeboot" power distribution unit to detect issues with a connected modem or network edge device.

The edgeboot acts to restore connectivity without requiring employee intervention. If a reboot does not restore service, the device will contact and dispatch the underlying ISP, among other customizable device-specific directives.

Users can view and manage their edgeboot devices, analyze events and network trends and adjust their alerting preferences.

The managed PDU features a customizable, self-healing algorithm to accurately detect when a connectivity issue arises.

Hanasis Co. Ltd.

Hanasis Co. Ltd., a South Korea-based manufacturer of point-of-sale equipment, kiosks, vending machines, kitchen display systems, touch monitors and peripherals, presented a selection of kiosk touchscreens. A first time SSIS Summit exhibitor, the company has a U.S. team based in Pasadena, California.

Hanasis currently serves more than 200 oversea customers in addition to its 1,000-plus customers in South Korea.

Hassett Logistics

Hassett Logistics, a provider of logistics services to the self-serve retail and information kiosk industries, presented information on its scheduling, handling and delivery services.

The company reviews each shipment's requirements and coordinates the deliveries with all involved parties.

Products and services include air transit, ground services, pick up and delivery, blanket wraps, sealed loads, liftgates, ramps, dedicated vehicles and debris removal.

Customers include retailers, supermarkets, office buildings and hospitals.

Honeywell

Honeywell presented its Xenon Ultra family of handheld barcode scanners for retail, joining the family of Xenon and Xenon XP general purpose scanners.

The company also offers scan engines, imager modules and software development kits for a variety of applications including self-service kiosks, vending, access control, healthcare, inventory management, mobile ticketing, mobile point-of-sale, airline services and more.

Ingenico

Ingenico, a provider of point-of-sale payment devices, introduced the Self/3000, an unattended device for self-service environments, in partnership with Payroc, a payments platform.

The payment device is pre-certified with the Payroc platform, enabling Payroc partners to integrate payments into their systems.

The terminal accepts multiple payment methods, including contactless, magstripe and EMV capabilities.

Payroc will provide the device exclusively through Unattended Card Payment, a hardware distributor to the North American market.

The Self/3000 is designed the vending, car wash, EV charging and more.

Kiosk Information Systems

Kiosk Information Systems, based in Louisville, Colorado, presented a range of self-service products and services. The company's offerings include self service kiosks for retail, hospitality, health care, transportation, tourism, government, self storage, ATMs, financial services and gaming.

The company offers an inventory returns kiosk to facilitate returns transactions.

The company also offers an inventory tracking system for tracking the movement and counts of inventory.

Kiosoft

Kiosoft, a provider of payment technology to the self service industry, presented its VQ-M payment solution featuring a 2.8-inch LCD screen and six touch keys.

The device's embedded modem enables direct SIM card insertion into the reader without the need for an additional modem to establish the network.

The modem supports QR payment and loyalty programs for the vending and amusement machine industries.

Kiosoft also supports the laundry, parking and air vacuum machine industries.

KitchenMate

KitchenMate provides technology that enables vending and micro-market operators to sell freshly-prepared hot meals using computer-vision smart-fridges, smart-cookers and a companion consumer app.

The customer opens the smart fridge, removes a "smart" meal pod and scans it with their phone, then loads the meal pod into the cooker where it heats and is ready within minutes. The customer then pays using the smartphone app.

MicroTouch

MicroTouch, a provider of touch solutions, presented its 15.6- and 22-inch touchscreens powered by Android 13 OS with Google GMS certification under the Enterprise Device License Agreement, to address digital security concerns. The Android 13 marks the first enterprise OS from Google.

The touchscreens feature chemically etched anti-glare coating to provide more consistent, durable and scratch resistant surfaces.

These models have been designed to enhance security for the retail, hospitality and corporate sectors.

In addition, the company's MicroTouch Mach AiO Android models feature the ARM processor for self-checkout, point-of-sale, point-of-information, point-of-service, digital signage and kitchen display kiosks.

Nidec Instruments America Corp.

Nidec Instruments Corp. is a Japan-based global manufacturer of industrial equipment that offers payment solutions for POS terminals, self-serve kiosks and ATMs. The company's motorized and manual card readers include both contact and contactless chip card solutions.

The company also offers dispensers, scanners and encoders for hospitality, loyalty, gift and prepaid applications.

OptConnect

OptConnect presented its newly created Summit backend platform to better support its customers. The new dashboard is the next evolution in the company's "Connectivity-as-a-Service" model to support customers as they expand and grow their network of connected devices.

Operators' customers can now sign on and see just those connections that they are authorized to see. The Summit platform allows users to provide exclusive access to groups of devices within their company and to third party organizations or individuals. These permissions are completely customizable to maximize flexibility, monitoring and security.

Users can group their devices by type, location, organization, technology, type of connected equipment or any other designation to see exactly what they want and need.

Orcam

Orcam, a provider of solutions for people who are vision or learning challenged, presented its OrCam MyEye and OrCam Read Solutions.

OrCam MyEye provides the vision challenged the ability to access visual information by audio in real time. The three-inch device magnetically snaps onto an eyeglass frame and features a touch bar, a 13 MP camera, two LEDs for low light environments and two microphones for voice commands.

OrCam Read is a handheld, point-and-click feature that reads text to the user. The user indicates where to begin reading and the device captures full pages of text from any surface.

HeyOrcam is a Bluetooth-enabled voice activation feature of OrCam Read that connects to any speaker or headphones that breaks an intuitive voice command to activate or access a device setting.

Panoptyc

Panoptyc presented its AI-enabled hardware/software solution to recognize micro market theft and alert operators of suspicious behavior.

The system's cameras enable video extraction whether firewall issues arise, the network speed is poor or the current DVR software undermines video quality.

The system's suspicious incident reports can streamline the operator's theft search and highlight the most suspicious events to review.

The solution also provides video and data proof of theft, eliminating the need to review extensive video.

Sweet Robo LLC

Sweet Robo LLC presented its Cotton Candy Robot that allows customers to witness their treat being spun and formed into shapes right before their eyes. A robotic arm takes a paper stick and spins various sugars into layers, then shapes the treat into a selected design.

The machine has a touchscreen, a sound system, a tracking app and accepts credit card and cash payments. Operators can custom order additional payment systems to accept alternate currencies and coins.

The company offers technical support via chatbots, video, Telegram or email.

SpacePole Inc.

SpacePole Inc., which provides mounting and mobility solutions for technology applications across the grocery, retail, hospitality, entertainment and transportation sectors, presented its mounting solutions and its kiosk.

The SpacePole kiosk offers a multifunctional platform with flexibility for a range of self-service applications including self-check-in/check-out, self ordering, endless aisle, product display and advertising, ticketing, click and collect and more.

The modular kiosk allows the company to customize solutions utilizing either a VESA compatible screen or tablet from 10 inches to 32 inches.

Switch Always On

Switch Always On continuously connects power and automatically reboots in the event of a connectivity loss.

The device plugs into a power outlet while the Ethernet port connects to a spare port on the cellular router, Ethernet switch, broadband gateway or Wi-Fi router.

Once all the machine's components are powered, the device configures using a smartphone app. The user can then configure the network to monitor Internet connectivity, local access points and its direct Ethernet connection to the broadband gateway.

The app, available on iOS and Android, displays the connectivity status and the power supplied to all connected 12V and 5V networked equipment.

Connected network equipment is continuously powered by a built-in battery up to 90 minutes. Once the device detects connectivity loss from either the Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular networks, it can automatically reboot the network equipment and restore connectivity.

Tecnosicurezza

Tecnosicurezza, a Verona, Italy-based lock and security system manufacturer with an office in Lexington, Kentucky, presented its range of VDS certified locks. The locks are available in three main versions.

The "Swingbolt" features a mechanism that guarantees whether the state of the bolt is "closed" or "open," along with microswitch integration options: single-tooth sintered steel latch or simplified wiring.

The "Deadbolt" offers anti-perforation reinforcement to minimize backlash and simplify wiring.

The "Latchbolt" is designed for inner safe departments.

The locks offer an extensive audit trail and "Pico-Spox" connectors for cabling in reduced spaces.

VE Solutions

VE Solutions, formerly known as Vendors Exchange International Inc., presented its VE Kiosk with a 22-inch touchscreen offering the flexibility to operate with or without a vending management system.

Features include checkout "hot buttons" for non-scan items.

The kiosk offers a single point of management for both micro markets and vending machines, and is compatible with Gimme, Streamware, Vendsys and Cantaloupe VMS platforms.

The kiosk also supports temperature monitoring, remote management and full or partial screen advertising.

Ventus Wireless LLC

Ventus Wireless LLC, a provider of 4G LTE connectivity, presented its VRB842 that provides a remote power reboot in one device. The unit provides secure 4G LTE connectivity and can remotely reboot two separate devices independently. The device supports IoT/M2M connected devices in distributed locations.

The Ventus Genesis web-based monitoring platform can reboot any device in a network from a single portal.

The VRB842 does not, unlike other reboot devices, require additional Internet connectivity. It also provides LAN network support via two Ethernet ports and embedded 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi.

WeVend

WeVend, a provider of payments platforms for unattended devices, presented its Android platform and cutting edge QR Code payment solution to offer more flexible payments, accepting debit cards, credit cards, campus cards and loyalty rewards points.

Wevend's "Pay By QR" Dymond IoT device reduces up front capital costs and simplifies machine control and payment experience; while the company's Android platform enables secure EMV contact, contactless and pin on-glass payments.

The payment terminal offers a 5-inch color screen and enables all cellular carriers. The IP65/IK10 hardware is waterproof, tamperproof and dirtproof.
