TMD Security solution stops deep-insert skimming spree

The company says its patented Card Protection Plate prevents the insertion of a slim inlay skimmer into the card reader throat — without affecting the customer experience in the slightest.


TMD Security, a provider of anti-skimming solutions for ATMs and self-service terminals, has introduced a new product designed to prevent the deployment of inlay, or "deep-insert," card skimming and shimming devices.

According to a press release, TMD developed its patented Card Protection Plate in response to an epidemic of inlay attacks at fuel pump card readers.

In these attacks, thieves would insert a wafer-thin data-recording device directly through the card slot and deep into the card reader where it is virtually impossible to detect.

The CPP narrows the card reader card slot enough to prevent insertion of an inlay device, but leaves enough room that a payment card can still be freely inserted and removed by the customer.

"Skimming on SSTs in gasoline stations was out of control," TMD Security EMEA Sales Director Robin Hamstra said in the release. "We needed to help SST manufacturers and deployers to protect their cardholders with a solution that was easy to install, maintenance-free and did not interfere with cardholder convenience."

He said that CPP has now been installed in more than more than 13,000 SSTs, bringing the problem of insert skimmers to a complete halt at protected fuel pumps.

Now the problem is migrating to ATMs, he said, but they, too, can be well protected with the Card Protection Plate, which is specifically designed to fit each card reader model.
