By using near-field communication (NFC), physical cards are no longer needed for Chase customers to use ATMs. The app uses QR-codes, which are scanned at POS by barcode readers (so no new hardware is required for merchants). Notably, both Chase and Starbucks are scaling QR-code based closed-loop payment networks.
