Online Bank Tops List of Midsize Businesses in Indiana

The banking industry often struggles to find interested and qualified candidates for technology positions despite a growing need. The struggle for talent can be particularly difficult for midsize banks that have the same need as larger financial institutions with greater brand recognition.

As the industry continues to evolve, it is important for banks to receive strong recognition for innovative work place environments with opportunities to grow.

One of the first online only banks was in the news this week for being a top place to work. Indiana based First Internet Bank opened in 1999 long before most online only banks, and now has more than $3.7 billion in assets. The bank provides what most brick and mortar banks offer their clients.

In addition to retail and small business customers for deposits and lending services, the bank also expanded over the years into commercial real estate loans, commercial and industrial loans, SBA financing and treasury management which has helped diversify revenue and allowed it to compete with regional banks in the commercial sector.

The recognition for First Internet Bank came from the Indianapolis Star’s annual “Top Workplaces in Indiana” list that was published this week, as the top company to work for in the category of all medium size businesses in the area. The list is not calculated primarily by outside evaluation methodology, but exclusively by employee surveys.

The bank previously received recognition by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for a similar award for best places to work in Indiana. What is noteworthy is that that award was not within a specific business sector category, but based on the size of the corporation.

First Internet Bank President and CEO David Becker commented, “We are proud to be recognized again as an employer of choice in Indianapolis. I take great pride in the fact that a primary driver of the recognition comes from the voice of our employees. We strive to create and foster an environment that engages our team members and rewards their individual contributions to our overall success. That focus allows us to create, what I believe, is a unique culture that benefits not only our employees, but our customers.”
