Mastercard Enables Tap To Pay For Miami Commuters

Transportation solutions provider Cubic Transportation Systems, along with the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), will enable tap-and-go payments at Miami’s Metrorail stations, according to a press release on Wednesday (Aug. 21). Commuters will be able to pay with contactless-enabled Visa and Mastercard bank cards, American Express credit cards, mobile phones and wearable devices.

The Metrobus service is expected to be added later this year, assisting the millions of travelers using public transportation in the city.

“My administration has been clearly focused on incorporating innovative technologies to make public transportation both hassle-free and appealing,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “The launch of contactless payment for our transit riders marks a great step forward for Miami-Dade County.”

The open payment structure gives travelers the option to choose their preferred payment method, creating a more flexible and lower-friction experience. The payments are charged directly to the accounts associated with the cards used, so there is no need to buy transit cards or tickets.

“We strive to make it easier to use transit. Now, you can tap your phone or card and go! Tapping to pay with a contactless-enabled bank card or digital wallet meets the high consumer expectations in today’s age of convenience,” said DTPW Director Alice N. Bravo, P.E.

Matt Cole, president of Cubic Transportation Systems, notes that Cubic is focused on delivering a seamless travel experience through cutting-edge technologies. “We are very proud to continue supporting Miami-Dade DTPW as it modernizes its transit system,” he added.

Miami-Dade DTPW first began its relationship with Cubric in 2016, when it hired the transportation solutions provider to revamp its EASY Card revenue management system and to provide back-office cloud computing services and support.
