The Explosion of the US Food and Grocery Industry During COVID-19

Even in trying times, opportunity presents itself to those that are vigilant and watchful. The US ecommerce food and grocery industry is growing at an accelerated rate as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Online spending and grocery shopping rates have doubled since 2019 and is projected to increase throughout 2020 as end-users exercise caution while procuring their groceries.

Those reaping the benefits of this staggering increase in online spending are continuing to invest in the feature/function of their sites to ensure customers are self-sufficient and have options for pickup/ delivery. Some businesses that are thriving as a result include:

  • Albertsons COS. INC: Ecommerce sales for eight weeks ending April 25th grew 243%, compared to the same period in 2019.
  • Target: Web sales grew 141% in Q1 compared to the same period in 2019
  • Costco: Reported similar gains of close to 100%

Each of these businesses allows a frictionless experience via order pickup, curbside pickup, or home delivery through their ecommerce or mobile applications.

What does that mean for other businesses in the food and grocery industry? When looking at total US grocery sales through all channels and share of the overall US market, the opportunity is massive for grocers big or small.
