How Managed Services Can Take You to the Cloud

You need to modernize a legacy application. You’ve looked at it from every angle you can and there’s no way around it. New features are very difficult to deploy, patching is near impossible and is leading to downtime, and security and compliance standards are becoming harder and harder to meet. You need to modernize your application and move it to the cloud. The issue is you don’t have the in-house cloud capabilities to do that or manage the infrastructure once you do. This means you can’t modernize the application, right? Not quite. Just because you don’t have those capabilities doesn’t mean no one does. This is where managed services come into play.

What Are Managed Services?

We just said you need managed services – what are they? Simply put, managed services are the outsourcing of management of daily operations of your infrastructure or individual applications. A managed service provider (MSP) is the one that works with you to manage your daily operations of your infrastructure or applications.

The purpose of this, as mentioned above, is often because you don’t have the capabilities in house to manage those operations, but you would benefit from a solution being hosted in the cloud. The ability to take advantage of an MSP’s skills isn’t the only advantage of managed services, though.

The Benefits of Managed Services

The benefits of the cloud generally are well known – the ability to innovate, use bandwidth as needed, bring data together and store it safely and securely, use the many services that cloud vendors provide, and work from anywhere. In the case of that pesky applications we mentioned earlier, you’ll be able to break it down into smaller parts and update it far more quickly and easily. For the IT team specifically, though, managed services solutions come with many benefits beyond that, both in terms of finances and productivity.

Financially, the advantages are straight-forward. You will have a set monthly cost that you will be able to budget for that is often lower than what you already pay. On top of that, you will be able to scale if you need more infrastructure and will have dedicated help that is included in your monthly costs.

The productivity benefits come in many forms. First and foremost, your IT team will be able to outsource troubleshooting and will instead be able to focus on tasks that they’re dedicated to. This obviously helps out in terms of filling knowledge gaps that you may have, but it also means that your team is able to prioritize the work they should be doing. This is especially the case for developers, who are able to focus on innovating and developing new features while the management of the cloud infrastructure falls on the MSP. As a result, time to deployment should be reduced significantly.
