3 Game-Changing ACTions: Learn, Do, and Teach

Learn Do Teach

Aristotle once said, “Those who know, do. Those that understand, teach.”

I think we can all agree that Aristotle was a pretty smart guy. Numerous studies have shown that the human brain responds best to goals that are presented as directives. That is, they are more effective when some kind of action is included.

I’m hoping that Aristotle wouldn’t mind if I render his observation in a more direct manner. The philosophy thus becomes: Learn, Do, and Teach.

Progressive and successful companies and individuals do these 3 things. They do them well. They do them all the time. As a result, these organizations continue to grow, evolve, and stay relevant. Let’s break them down….

Learn – Lifelong learners are simply better at what they do than folks who think they already know everything. This has been proven time and time again. If you want to be seen as a leader, you must never stop learning. NBC has been running a campaign for the better part of 20 years called, “The More You Know.” You’ve seen the commercials. The message is simple enough: educate yourself, be open to learning new things, and you’ll be much better suited to handle opportunities and challenges. Never stop learning.

Do – Knowledge is supposed to be used to take action. What good are facts, figures, tactics, and strategies if they’re not put to use? Organizations often struggle with this part. Think of all of the meetings that you are forced to attend. If you’re lucky and actually learn something new, how often is that knowledge put into practice immediately? Companies spend hours and days conducting strategic planning retreats. Yet too many still don’t put their plans into action right away. Action remains the only thing that has ever changed the world. Talk is indeed cheap. Stop talking. Start doing.

Teach – If you’ve found some kernel of knowledge or strategy that works (as evidenced by putting the knowledge into action) share those successful tips with others, especially those that work for or with you! Leaders tend to focus on making people better. They root for the people they are leading. They provide the resources needed for achievement.

Learn, do and teach. What are some tactics you can apply immediately to get the ball rolling?
