WestStar Credit Union in Las Vegas names new CEO

WestStar Credit Union in Las Vegas named John Bagents president and CEO.

He succeeds Rick Schmidt, who announced his retirement from the $257 million-asset credit union in May.

Bagents had been CEO of the $94 million-asset County Schools Federal Credit Union in Ventura, California, since 2014. Before that he was a federal examiner with the National Credit Union Administration, WestStar said.

John Bagents is the new president and CEO of WestStar Credit Union in Las Vegas.

"We look forward to having [Bagents] join our management team to continue growing WestStar in the Las Vegas and Reno gaming communities. We believe his experience and expertise will help accomplish our goals," Craig Hawkins, chairman of WestStar's board, said in a press release Tuesday.

Schmidt, who was WestStar's chief executive since 2010, said he plans to spend more time with his family as well as enjoy some leisure activities.

"He has led the credit union through some tough times and has kept WestStar a safe and sound financial institution," Hawkins said in the press release.

WestStar serves about 21,000 members, including people employed in Nevada's gaming industry.

The credit union earned $542,000 in the first nine months of 2022, a 41% decrease compared with the first three quarters of 2021, according to call report data from the NCUA.
