For anyone who has to fill prescriptions, there’s an app for that — finally.
Friday, CVS Health launched its new end-to-end mobile payment app, CVS Pay, for select stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The solution is focused on easing the process of picking up prescriptions or payments by CVS pharmacy customers.
This is a product of their Boston-based innovation lab, created to help transform the company into a more modern organization, as opposed to a simple, traditional pharmacy. This is the first mobile pay option that CVS Health has adopted, and the company is relying on its own POS hardware for the product.
“If you look at the CVS solution, it isn’t just about payment,” said Levvel payments lead Scott Harkey, on why CVS Health chose to build their own solutions as opposed to connecting with Apple Pay. “The app has the ability to transmit the info needed for prescription pickup, loyalty, payment, and coupons, all with the single barcode scan. This combines three or four different things the customer has to do at point of sale today into a single interaction.”
Customers picking up their prescriptions will now be able to store additional payment accounts like a FSA or HSA account, allowing them to split purchases, as well as store all of the information needed for verification, such as a customer’s name, birth date, signature, and PIN, making the process significantly easier than the previous manual version.
CVS Pay even offers options for drive-through service, where users will get a pick-up number prior to paying by barcode. Users will also receive in-app confirmation of their transactions for their records, as well as the ability to store funds and earn CVS loyalty points.
CVS Pay is scheduled to be available nationwide by the end of the year.
