Four major Australian banks have dropped fees for cash withdrawals at their domestic ATMs, in a move that could save Australian ATM users millions annually.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation, and the National Australia Bank Ltd all immediately removed their fees from their machines this past Sunday, while a fourth bank, the Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd, is set to shut down the charges come early October.
The move comes after a rising call for tighter financial regulation in the country thanks to a series of scandals, including cash laundering through the ATMs of the nation’s largest lender, Commonwealth Bank.
Altogether, it is estimated that the lack of fees will save ATM users about $500 million AUD, or approximately $634 million USD, over the course of a year.
