The ATM industry has come through a lot of ups and downs over the years, but it continues to tackle every issue head on, as ATM Marketplace and KAL ATM Software found in the 14th annual ATM and Self-service Software Trends and Analysis report. A webinar sponsored by KAL and hosted by ATM Marketplace analyzed some key findings of the report on Nov. 2.

Bradley Cooper, editor of ATM Marketplace, moderated the webinar with panelist Marylin Bell, head of marketing at KAL ATM Software and Steve Hensley, EVP of global sales, KAL.

The report, which is available on ATM Marketplace, compiled data from financial institutions and other industries that use ATMs. Despite the common belief that cash is decreasing, 43% of respondents said their numbers of ATMs increased in the past year, with 29% saying it stayed about the same and 28% saying the number decreased.

At the same time, ATM operators are still dealing with the impact of COVID-19, which was a key area of focus for the webinar. Bell discussed how the pandemic has changed every sector of business, including self-service banking. Bell said that in order to meet the needs of the post-pandemic economy, self-service banking would need to make changes, just like other industries.

For example, due to the pandemic, many consumers began adopting digital payments. Although this could impact the ATM, Bell said that ATMs can keep up with more complex tools such as cloud-based architecture and the nexo messaging protocol that will both make ATMs less reliant on specific operating systems and allow them to leverage digital assets from other channels.

During the webinar, Bell addressed a variety of topics such as how banks can utilize contactless transactions, remote teller video and mobile phone integration to boost their ATMs effectiveness and issues with Windows operating system upgrades and finding other OS alternatives.
