First look: 2019 ATM and Self-service Software Trends

On Sept. 12, ATM Marketplace and KAL ATM Software will publish the 12th annual edition of ATM and Self-service Software Trends report.

To coincide with the release, ATM Marketplace and KAL will host a free one-hour webinar sharing highlights from the 2019 software trends survey (included in the report) and answering questions from the audience about findings in the report.

It's your opportunity to dig deep into this year's industry and consumer surveys and discover the likely impact of today's software trends on consumer self-service in retail banking.

What follows is an excerpt from the introduction of report.

A fractured focus

In this year's survey, which builds on findings from previous years, 64% of respondents indicated that ATM hardware upgrades were prompted by OS migrations.

If this is the case, it follows that, driven by the dictates of Microsoft's end-of-life schedule, many ATM managers are finding it next to impossible to build thoughtfully and strategically planned fleets that truly respond to their customers' and banks' specific needs.

Instead, they find themselves needing to allocate a large part of their current ATM channel budget to the next round of upgrade-related costs.

"It is just super expensive for the banks to do it," KAL CEO Aravinda Korala acknowledged. "But from the perspective of the bank, it is not just cost. It's a really complicated project. You've got to project manage lots of vendors and lots of moving parts."

Korala said that the tendency to point a finger at Microsoft for the cycle of ATM upgrades is somewhat unfair, given consumers' enormous appetite for technological improvement and software and hardware vendors' untenable costs for providing eternal support for outdated products.

"There's simply no alternative to doing upgrades," he said. "In the modern world, you cannot buy Windows software or PCs or anything else and hope to run them for 20 years. You've got to accept that that's what you have to do. What you can't do is just to say, 'Well, what I really want to do is to buy hardware and not change it ever again.' It's just not an option."

According to Korala, forward-thinking banks cope with issues of ATM software and hardware obsolescence by implementing a "rolling process" of ATM replacements.

"They replace a certain percentage of their hardware every year and then put the latest software on all of it," he explained. "Basically, it's facing reality and doing what needs to be done in little chunks. You've got to ask the question, 'If I want to be compliant and do all the things I need to do over a 20-year period, then what do I need to do each year?'"
