Messaging service WhatsApp is rolling out support for QR payments in its Android beta, according to reports, with the service expected to have a wider rollout in the next few weeks.
Consumers wishing to use QR payments to pay must first have WhatsApp Payments enabled, which currently supports a range of payment options across the world, including “Send to UPI ID” for users in India (a UPI ID allows a user to send a virtual payment without adding additional bank information).
To begin using QR payments, users will need to install the latest version of the Android beta, it was reported yesterday. Once that’s downloaded, a user will need to click QR code in settings.
Once that QR code is recognized, users just need to put in the amount for a payment.
At the end of last year, WhatsApp had 1.5 billion mobile active users.
