Pet goods retail chain PetSmart announced Thursday it had opened 28 new brick-and-mortar storefronts in North America during the quarter that ended Nov. 1, 2017, with new locations spanning the United States and Canada.

In a press release, the company said the latest expansion efforts add to the 35 new stores launched during the first half of the fiscal year, bringing the total count of store openings in the region to 63 stores.

“Continuing to expand our brick-and-mortar footprint is an important part of our strategy to be the most convenient, best-in-class pet retailer,” said Brian Amkraut, executive vice president of store operations for PetSmart. “In addition to our store growth, we continue to take steps to further enhance the customer experience. This quarter, for example, we launched The Groomery by PetSmart, our innovative new store concept focusing exclusively on pet grooming services.”

Following the close of the third quarter, PetSmart said it had reached “a significant milestone” by opening its 1,600th brick-and-mortar location. The 1,600 stores are located in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, and the company operates another 207 in-store PetSmart PetsHotel dog and cat boarding facilities.

Last year, PetSmart announced that its PetSmart Pet Spas opened in August. The offering focuses on pet grooming services in a brick-and-mortar facility suffused with modern design touches. The PetSmart Pet Spa locations offer coffee bars and lounge areas where owners can enjoy a free drink while waiting for their pets to be groomed.

New U.S. PetSmart locations can be found in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. New store openings in Canada can be found in Ontario and Saskatchewan.
