EMVCo Updates Protocol To Prevent CNP Fraud

EMVCo, the global technical body that facilitates the worldwide interoperability and acceptance of secure payment transactions,  announced late last week that it published the EMV 3-D Secure Protocol and Core Functions Specification v2.2.0.

In a press release, EMVCo said the specification has been updated to include enhancements that will better promote and optimized the consumer experience and at the same time support new authentication abilities when making purchases online. EMVCo said EMV 3DS is a messaging protocol that enables frictionless consumer authentication and lets consumers authenticate themselves when making card not present eCommerce purchases. According to EMVCo, the additional security level helps stop unauthorized card not present transactions and provides more protection for the merchants from fraud.  The EMV3DS version 2.2.0 builds upon the current specification, enabling 3DS product providers to confirm that their solutions will perform in accordance with the specification, it said in the press release.

“EMV 3DS exists to promote secure, consistent consumer authentication for eCommerce transactions across all channels and connected devices, while optimizing the cardholder’s experience,” comments Stephanie Ericksen, chair of the EMVCo executive committee. “Our work in this area continues to evolve to ensure we respond to new marketplace requirements. EMVCo continues to encourage the payments community to get involved and provide feedback on the EMV 3DS activity.”

According to EMVCo, the specification improves communications between merchants and issuers and provides additional features for merchants and issuers, includes two new features to enable authentication for various payment scenarios — including mail order and telephone order transactions — and expands the existing data elements to promote communication of pre-checkout authentication events and associated data. EMVCo said the enhancements are available for all 3DS components that are involved in a transaction and have updated their software. Earlier in 2018 EMVCo announced the launch of the full EMV 3DS Test Platform that allows functional testing of EMV 3DS solutions.
