While many of us are still processing the events of 2020, 2022 is just around the corner. A lot has changed these past two years, but several trends have remained steady across all business verticals, such as the increasing customer desire for both customization and a consistent experience across all platforms.

In the financial world in particular, customers are increasingly examining their options, and aren't necessarily staying loyal to their current banks. As Alex Sion, global consumer banking lead at Citi Ventures put it the closing keynote at the Bank Customer Experience Summit held in Chicago from Sept. 13 to 15: "Customer loyalty is up for grabs."

In this climate, it might make sense to reduce the number of ATMs due to concern over cleanliness and demand for cashless products, but we at ATM Marketplace believe it is a better idea to deploy more ATMs in 2022.

Don't believe us? Here are two reasons you should consider deploying more ATMs.

They expand banking access

First, ATMs have helped banks expand their customers' access to basic banking needs, especially during times when government COVID-19 restrictions kept branches closed. As a result, many banks actually increased their number of ATMs during 2021.

In fact, the ATM Software Trends Report found that 43% of banks increased the number of ATMs they deployed, with 29% keeping the same amount. Banks gave a variety of reasons in the report why they did this, but one consistent reason was that customers still needed access to cash, regardless if the branch was open.

Putting the pandemic aside, customers also want access to banking on their terms. They don't want to have to go in during branch's limited hours to withdraw cash, pay a bill or deposit checks, and ATMs can help provide these services, which leads right into our next point.

They can offer a full branch experience

Traditionally, ATMs only dispensed cash for customers, but that is rapidly changing with the introduction of many new features that help deliver a full experience outside of the branch.

Certain ATMs can now provide services such as:

  • Interactive teller livestream for banking questions.
  • Bill payments.
  • Loan services.
  • Pre-staged transactions.
  • Cardless transactions.
  • Custom bill denominations.

With these services, ATMs can meet the customer where they are and provide a customized banking experience.

For banks to succeed in 2022, they will need to deliver solutions that improve the customer's banking experience, and self-service solutions like ATMs will help with that task.
