ATM software is about to enter a new stage of innovation with the launch of the new standard: XFS4IoT. A webinar, hosted on ATM Marketplace and sponsored by KAL ATM Software, discussed the standard and what it means for the industry.

Bradley Cooper, editor of ATM Marketplace, moderated the webinar that featured panelists KAL CEO Aravinda Korala and Steve Hensley, EVP for global sales at KAL.

XFS, which stands for extension for financial services, acts as a global ATM software standard, with the most recent version XFS3 debuting in 2000 and is used globally, Hensley said during the webinar. However, the tool is largely in the hands of users to test and apply, rather than in the XFS Committee.

The XFS Committee, "defines the XFS specification, the API of the SPs and publishes the XFS specification," Hensely explained during the webinar, while vendors are "100% responsible for the design, development and testing of XFS for their system."

Now, there is a new standard on the horizon, the XFS4IoT, which has a target launch toward the end of 2021. This software is operating system agnostic and is cloud native, so devices from multiple manufacturers can run in the cloud.

The standard will also improve security for ATMs, Korala said during the presentation.

It features, "built in security with end-to-end device authentication," with "optional embedded hardware secure element inside each component."

Some of the new security features include:

  • TR32 key distribution.
  • Encryption keys inside a key vault in each device.
  • HMAC security token to protect device commands.
  • TLS 1.3 connectivity.
  • Only uses trusted Hardware Security Module in cloud and Hardware Security Element in device.
  • On the communication side, the software will be fully compatible for both 5G and IoT technologies.

The software itself is being developed by 75 companies and more than 220 are involved in the developer working group, Korala said. The members are working together on GitHub to develop the best source code possible for the software.

The group's mission is to "jumpstart XFS4Iot," and provide rapid development of high quality XFS4 SPs" and "maximize interoperability between applications and SPs," Korala said.
