There are two good reasons to escape this month to Orlando, Florida. The first is that it’s about the furthest place on the continent from the polar vortex. The second is that it’s the host city of the 20th annual ATMIA US conference, Feb. 19-21.

Conference exhibitors and attendees will, no doubt, arrive in Orlando two weeks from now with their own particular list of priorities. Ours includes people, products and sessions that will tell us what’s trending in 2019.

Tuesday, Feb. 19

1) Workshops

It’s becoming more and more difficult to choose among workshops at the conference as options and topics continue to expand. This year’s lineup includes five workshops — three in the morning and two in the afternoon, along with ATMIA committee meetings. Topics will include security, cardless access, ITM servicing, business management and OS migration. Admission to all workshops is included in the registration price.

2) Town hall

Once again, the town hall meeting will offer the opportunity for attendees to engage with experts on hot topics in the industry, including this year’s focus topic, the continuing importance of cash. Town hall participants will have the opportunity to share their concerns and get expert insights from ATMIA US Executive Director David Tente and panelists including:

  • Brad Nolan, Executive Vice President, Allpoint Solutions
  • Hannah Walker, Senior Director, Technology and Nutrition Policy, Food Marketing Institute
  • John Drechny, CEO, Merchant Advisory Group
  • Paige Anderson, Director of Government Relations, National Association of Convenience Stores

3) Exhibit hall

This is the place to see what's coming next in banking hardware, software and services, with more than 100 exhibitor booths to check out. And as always, it's the place for cocktails, confabs and new business connections at evening receptions immediately following day-one workshops and day-two breakouts.

Wednesday, Feb. 20

4) Keynote: Chris Bertish

Among numerous other accomplishments Chris recently became the first person ever to complete a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean (more than 4,660 miles) in 93 days on a stand-up paddleboard. His experience will inspire and motive you to Dream it. See it. Believe It. Achieve it.

5) Breakout Session 7: Recycling ATMs: What are the trailblazing US banks doing?

Research suggests that banks can save 40 percent to 66 percent on cash handling by using cash recycling ATMs. Learn how and why leading banks implemented recycling ATMs long before it became mainstream in the US and what lessons were learned during deployment.

Moderator: Scott Hackl, Executive Vice President, Hyosung

Panelists:

  • Matthew Schwemlein, Branch Technology Specialist, Altra Federal Credit Union
  • Steven Hill, Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer, RCB Bank

6) Breakout Session 14: Panel Discussion — The outlook for NFC in the ATM channel

EMV migration in the ATM channel is nearly complete, but contactless terminals are few and far between. Our panel of experts will discuss hardware and software requirements, network processing in the U.S., and the outlooak for wider deployment of contactless transactions in the ATM channel.

Moderator: Craig Demetres, Vice President, Transaction Services, JP Morgan Chase

Panelists:

  • Andrew Oasen, ATM Product Manager, NYCE Payments Network LLC
  • Brenda Pino, Vice President, Physical Channels, BMO Harris Bank NA

Thursday, Feb. 21

7) General Session 4: The War on Cash — Fake News

Media reports frequently talk about movement towards a less-cash marketplace. But how real is the war on cash? The Federal Reserve Bank conducts an annual national consumer survey of payment use including cash payments. This session will reveal the findings of the latest survey and identify trends in cash use cdin the United States.

Presenter: David Lott, Payments Risk Expert, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta

8) General Session 6: The Future of the Next-Gen ATM Initiative – 2019 and Beyond

ATMIA USA Executive Director David Tente will wrap up the conference with an update on the next-gen ATM initiative currently underway. The next-gen project’s app- and API-based architecture turns the consumer’s own mobile device into an ATM interface to enable robust new functionality and interoperability. Tente will take a quick look at the history of the initiative, introduce 2019 mileposts, and outline expectations for 2020 and beyond.

The venue for the conference is Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. Situated a stone’s throw from Epcot, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Hollywood Studios and Blizzard Beach Water Park, it’s all the reason you need to come for the conference and stay for a long, polar vortex-free weekend.
