Walmart Pay Expands Its US Reach

The retail giant’s payment method is finally here.

Back in December, Walmart announced plans to enter the mobile payments game with its own proprietary payments platform by turning the Walmart.com app into the way that consumers can pay at the physical point of sale.

Shortly after the Walmart Pay news was announced, Walmart SVP of Services Daniel Eckert told Karen Webster that the payment method was built to leverage a habit that its customers already know how to do really well: shop online at Walmart.com.

The scan and go based payment system allows customers to ring in the purchase, scan a QR code with their phone – and poof, done. Walmart Pay does not keep any card data on the users’ phone (though it does work with all major debit, credit, prepaid or Walmart cards), instead holding that payment data virtually.

One June 30, Walmart announced that it was bringing Walmart Pay to Arizona, California, New Mexico, Washington and Idaho. That announcement followed a larger wave of announcement on June 23, when Walmart officially launched Walmart Pay across 15 U.S. states. The payment method enables customers at select stores to pay with any iOS or Android smartphone, any major payment type and at any checkout lane – all through the Walmart app.

As of June 23, Walmart Pay became available in: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi and Washington, D.C.

“We can’t wait to hear what our customers and associates in [these states] think of Walmart Pay. The service was built to make shopping easier and faster, something we know our customers want,” Eckert said in a statement.

Walmart Pay is a powerful addition to our app, a tool that we’re using to transform the shopping experience by seamlessly connecting our online assets and our stores for customers. The service opens the door to new and better ways we can serve the 140 million customers who shop our stores each week,” he added.
