5) A taller ladder: Secrets to thwarting ATM attacks

As the ATM industry focuses on mitigating risks against black box and malware-based cyberattacks, criminals are reverting to lower-tech attack methods to access cash — the latest of these being transaction reversal fraud.

With a year-over-year increase of 21% to report in ATM revenues, NCR President and CEO Mike Hayford was in a positive frame of mind on Tuesday afternoon during the company's Q1 earnings call, telling analysts "We're off to a good start to the year."

With big players like Mastercard and Visa mandating that all new cards and payment terminals be contactless enabled, global growth of the technology is set to soar in the next few years. This sets the stage perfectly for biometric payment cards.

One approach to the problem of ATM physical attacks has been to harden the machine. But this only serves to increase the level of force used in an attack. According to Spinnaker, the best way to stop physical attacks on ATMs is to make the cash in them not worth having.

As Gerrard Schmid embarks on his second year at the helm of Diebold Nixdorf, it seems fair to say that his most notable achievement to date is having squeezed so much cost out of running the company.
