Apple Adds New Face ID Functionality

Through a new Face ID setting, Apple’s latest iOS 12 potentially allows more than one person to use the feature on a particular iPhone X. In the past, only one user has been able to register his or her face with an iPhone, 9to5Mac reported.

The new feature can be enabled through a toggle to “Set Up an Alternative Appearance.” According to the feature’s description, “Face ID can recognize an alternative appearance,” and can “continuously lear[n] how you look.” But the new setting has one limitation: If users do choose to allow another person to add his or her face to the device, he or she must delete both faces.

The news comes as Apple’s annual developer conference, WWDC, helped boost the company’s shares to an all-time high on Monday (June 4). According to CNBC, the conference in San Jose, California drew tens of thousands of third-party programmers from around the world for a preview of the company’s new tools and features, as well as its new operating system. As a result, Apple’s stock rose as much as 1.7 percent to $193.42, pushing its market capitalization past $940 billion. The shares have gained 24 percent over the past year.

Apple announced several features and upgrades at the conference, including the new iOS 12 operating system. Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently revealed that as of this week, developers have earned $100 billion through the Apple App Store. In addition, Cook had announced that there are 500 million weekly visitors to the App Store.

The news also comes as engineers at the tech company have been working on a series of tools through a digital health initiative to help users monitor how much time they are spending on their Apple devices and within certain apps. According to people familiar with Apple’s plans, the features will be bundled into a menu in Apple’s iOS 12, Bloomberg had reported.
